All associated with the Daniel O’Connell Summer School wish to express their deep regret at the death of Seamus Mallon, politician and statesman.
Seamus spoke at the 2019 Summer School in Cahersiveen and was the first recipient of the Daniel O’Connell Award.
‘Seamus, by his enduring commitment to peaceful, democratic means of resolving conflict epitomised in his generation the political legacy of Daniel O’Connell and for that reason, was a most fitting recipient of the award’ said Professor Maurice Bric, the Academic Director of the Summer School.
Those who attended the School were deeply privileged to hear Seamus speak about how he had worked to achieve a peaceful settlement of the conflict in Northern Ireland and to create , a ‘shared home place’ for all traditions on the island of Ireland.
Mary O’Connor, on behalf of the Summer School Committee, offered her sympathy to Seamus’ daughter Orla Mallon, her husband Mark Lenny and their daughter Lara on their great loss and said what a privilege it had been to meet them all at last year’s School.
